Inger Bergström’s work can be regarded as belonging to an expanded field where textile materials and methods are examined. Here her focus has for a long time consisted of the three-dimensional and spatial, where the inherent references of different materials may emerge. Her recent works take a more formal consideration of the textile surface – the actual character of the fabric emerges, its colour and texture – and ends up in two-dimensional abstract compositions.
Among the artistic projects she has initiated and run are the exhibition Stories About at the Textile Museum in Borås, 2019 and a major public art installation, together with colleague Ilkka Isaksson, at the New Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm 2017.
She has held the position as professor at both Konstfack in Stockholm and the University of Design and Crafts in Gothenburg. In addition to her MFA from Konstfack, she has a MA from Södertörn University, with a thesis on how artistic processes can be described and reflected upon.
In November 2022 she will have a solo show at Konstakademien in Stockholm.
Inger Bergström is represented by Berg Gallery, Stockholm.
